The History of the Hannibal Red Dragon Tattoo

The Hannibal Red Dragon Tattoo is a nod to Thomas Harris’ novel, Red Dragon, which was first published in 1981. The novel tells the story of FBI agent Will Graham and his pursuit of a serial killer known as “The Tooth Fairy.” In the novel, the killer is obsessed with William Blake’s painting, The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun. The painting becomes a central theme of the story, and the killer even gets a tattoo of the Red Dragon on his back. When the television series Hannibal was created, the producers wanted to pay homage to the original novel by incorporating the Red Dragon into the story. The result was the creation of the character Francis Dolarhyde, a serial killer who becomes obsessed with the Red Dragon and gets a tattoo of it on his back.
