Johan Hegg Tattoos: A Deep Dive into the Viking Metal Singer’s Ink

Johan Hegg, the lead singer of Swedish Viking metal band Amon Amarth, is known for his powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. But he’s also recognized for his striking and intricate tattoos, which adorn his arms, chest, and back. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Johan Hegg’s tattoos, their meanings, and the reactions they’ve elicited from fans and fellow musicians alike.

The Viking Inspiration

Unsurprisingly, many of Hegg’s tattoos are inspired by Viking culture and mythology. One of his most prominent pieces is a full back tattoo of the Viking hero Sigurd, slaying the dragon Fafnir. The tattoo took over 60 hours to complete and was done by Swedish artist Niki Norberg. Hegg has also shared photos of other Viking-themed tattoos, including a Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer) on his left arm and a Valknut (a symbol associated with Odin) on his right.

Tributes to Family and Friends

Not all of Hegg’s tattoos are explicitly Viking-related. He has several pieces dedicated to his family and friends, including a portrait of his grandfather on his chest and a memorial tattoo for a friend who passed away. Hegg has also shared photos of a tattoo of his daughter’s name and a piece on his left arm depicting a wolf, which he has said represents his loyalty to his friends.

The Controversial “White Power” Tattoo

In 2017, Hegg faced criticism and backlash from fans after a photo surfaced of a tattoo on his stomach that appeared to read “white power.” Hegg quickly issued a statement denouncing racism and explaining that the tattoo was actually a reference to the band White Power (not to be confused with the white supremacist movement). He has since covered up the tattoo with a new piece.

Reactions from Fans and Musicians

As with any musician’s tattoos, Hegg’s ink has elicited a range of reactions from fans and fellow musicians. Many fans have praised Hegg’s dedication to Viking culture and the impressive artistry of his tattoos. However, the “white power” tattoo was understandably controversial and led some fans to question Hegg’s beliefs. Fellow metal musicians have also weighed in on Hegg’s tattoos, with some offering praise and others criticizing the “white power” tattoo in particular.

Conclusion

Johan Hegg’s tattoos are a reflection of his passion for Viking culture, as well as his dedication to his loved ones. While the “white power” tattoo caused controversy, Hegg has since addressed the issue and covered up the tattoo. Ultimately, Hegg’s tattoos are a deeply personal expression of his identity and artistic vision.
