In this article, we will explore the history and significance of the Jim Morrison Lizard King tattoo and its enduring legacy in pop culture.

The Origin of the Lizard King Tattoo

The Lizard King tattoo was first seen on Jim Morrison’s chest in a photograph taken by Joel Brodsky for the cover of The Doors’ 1967 album, Strange Days. The image showed Morrison shirtless, with his arms crossed, and the tattoo of a green lizard with a crown on its head prominently displayed on his chest.

According to some accounts, Morrison got the tattoo in 1966 while he was living in Venice Beach, California. Some say that he was inspired by a poem he had written, “The Celebration of the Lizard,” while others claim that he was influenced by the Native American culture and their reverence for lizards as symbols of transformation and regeneration.

The Significance of the Lizard King Tattoo

The Lizard King tattoo became an integral part of Jim Morrison’s persona and captured the essence of his enigmatic personality. The tattoo symbolized Morrison’s fascination with reptiles and his belief in the transformative power of art and music. The lizard, with its ability to shed its skin and renew itself, represented Morrison’s desire for constant reinvention and self-expression.

The crown on the lizard’s head was a nod to Morrison’s self-proclaimed title, the Lizard King, which he had coined during a performance at the Whiskey A Go-Go nightclub in Los Angeles. The title became synonymous with Morrison’s image and was often used to describe his wild and unpredictable behavior on stage.
