Unveiling the Mystical Meaning behind Sebastian Michaelis’ Tattoo
The Tattoo
If you are a fan of the popular anime series, Black Butler, then you must be familiar with Sebastian Michaelis, the demon butler, and his iconic tattoo. The tattoo, located on his left hand, features the symbol of a pentagram with a goat’s head in the center. It is not only a visual representation of his demonic identity, but it also holds a deeper meaning.
The Symbolism
The pentagram is a common symbol in occultism and is often associated with black magic and Satanism. However, in Sebastian’s tattoo, the pentagram is inverted, which changes its meaning. An inverted pentagram is a symbol of spiritual enlightenment, knowledge, and personal power. It represents the five elements of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, and their harmonious balance. The goat’s head in the center of the pentagram is a symbol of Baphomet, a deity that was worshipped by the Knights Templar. Baphomet represents duality and the balance between good and evil. It is often depicted as a hermaphrodite, with both masculine and feminine qualities, representing the balance between the two.

The Inspiration
The inspiration for Sebastian’s tattoo is believed to come from the real-life occultist, Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a prominent figure in the occult world during the early 20th century and was known for his use of the inverted pentagram as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. He also created the symbol of Baphomet, which is now commonly associated with Satanism.

Sebastian’s tattoo adds to the overall symbolism of the series. Black Butler is not just a simple story of a demon butler serving his master. It is a complex tale of good versus evil, balance, and power. The tattoo represents Sebastian’s role in this story and his connection to the supernatural world.
