Behind Bars Tattoo: A Unique Art Form

Behind bars tattoo is a form of tattoo art that originated in the prison system. It is also known as prison tattooing, jailhouse tattooing, or penitentiary tattooing. This type of tattooing is done using makeshift tools and ink made from various materials such as ashes, pencil lead, or melted plastic.

The History of Behind Bars Tattoo

Behind bars tattoo has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. The practice started in the United States prison system and was used as a means of self-expression and identification among inmates.

Since inmates were not allowed to have personal belongings, they would use these tattoos to symbolize their beliefs, affiliations, and status within the prison hierarchy. These tattoos also served as a way for inmates to remember their life before prison and to mark their time served.

Over time, the practice of behind bars tattooing spread to other countries and became more refined. Today, it is considered a unique art form that has gained popularity outside of the prison walls.

The Technique of Behind Bars Tattooing

Behind bars tattooing is a challenging and risky process that requires skill and creativity. The tools used for tattooing are often made from everyday objects such as paper clips, toothbrushes, and guitar strings. The ink used for the tattoos is made by mixing various materials such as charcoal, oil, and shampoo.

The tattoo artist must have a steady hand and be able to work quickly and efficiently to avoid detection. Inmates often work in groups and take turns being the artist and the subject of the tattoo.

The Meaning Behind Behind Bars Tattoos

Behind bars tattoos have a deep and personal meaning for the inmates who wear them. Each tattoo has a unique story and symbolizes something different for each individual. Some popular designs include teardrops, spider webs, and barbed wire.

Teardrop tattoos are often associated with murder, while spider webs represent time spent in prison. Barbed wire tattoos symbolize the inmate’s desire for freedom and the obstacles they face in achieving it.

The Risks of Behind Bars Tattooing

Behind bars tattooing is a dangerous practice that poses several health risks to inmates. The makeshift tools used for tattooing can easily transmit bloodborne diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C. The ink used for the tattoos can also cause allergic reactions and infections.

In addition to the health risks, inmates who are caught tattooing can face disciplinary action and have their sentence extended. This is why many prisons have implemented strict rules against tattooing.

The Popularity of Behind Bars Tattooing

Despite the risks involved, behind bars tattooing has gained popularity outside of the prison system. Many people are drawn to the unique and raw nature of the tattoos and the stories behind them.

Tattoo artists who specialize in behind bars tattooing have become more common in recent years. These artists use modern tattooing tools and ink but still maintain the traditional style and meaning behind the tattoos.
