Rihanna’s Maori Tattoo: A Contemporary Take on an Ancient Art

When Rihanna debuted her hand tattoo in 2013, it immediately caught the attention of the media and her fans worldwide. The intricate design, inspired by the traditional Maori tattoo, was a bold and unexpected choice for the pop star.

The Origins of Maori Tattoo

Maori tattoo, also known as ta moko, has a long and rich history in the indigenous culture of New Zealand. It was traditionally used to signify a person’s social status, family history, and achievements. The tattoos were created using chisels made of bone or shark teeth, which were tapped into the skin with a mallet.

Today, Maori tattoo is still practiced by some members of the Maori community, but it has also gained popularity among non-indigenous people as a form of body art.

Rihanna’s Tattoo Design

Rihanna’s tattoo was created by Inia Taylor, a tattoo artist from New Zealand who specializes in Maori tattoo. The design features intricate patterns and symbols that represent Rihanna’s personal journey and her connection to Maori culture. The tattoo covers her entire hand and extends up her wrist.

One of the most striking features of Rihanna’s tattoo is the placement of a small cross on her wrist. This has led some to speculate that the tattoo has religious significance, although Rihanna has not confirmed this.

The Controversy Surrounding Rihanna’s Tattoo

While many praised Rihanna for her bold choice of tattoo, others criticized her for appropriating Maori culture. Some members of the Maori community felt that the tattoo was disrespectful and that Rihanna had not earned the right to wear it.

In response to the criticism, Rihanna stated that she had consulted with members of the Maori community and had received their approval for the tattoo. She also emphasized that the tattoo was a tribute to Maori culture and that she had a deep respect for it.

The Legacy of Rihanna’s Tattoo

Since Rihanna’s tattoo debuted, it has become a popular design choice for those seeking a bold and meaningful tattoo. Many have been inspired by the intricate patterns and symbols used in Maori tattoo, and have incorporated them into their own designs.

However, the controversy surrounding Rihanna’s tattoo has also raised important questions about cultural appropriation and the ethics of borrowing from other cultures. It is important for those seeking to adopt elements of another culture to do so respectfully and with an understanding of the cultural significance of those elements.

“While I appreciate the interest in Maori art and tattoo, it’s important to remember that these are not just designs to be used for fashion or decoration. They have deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Maori people, and it’s important to approach them with respect and understanding.”

Inia Taylor, Tattoo Artist

“I was honored to create Rihanna’s tattoo, and I believe that she approached it with respect and a desire to learn about Maori culture. However, I also understand why some members of the Maori community might feel uneasy about non-Maori people wearing Maori tattoo.
