Maynard Keenan Tattoos: A Look into the Ink

Maynard James Keenan, lead vocalist of the band Tool, has been known for his unique and intriguing tattoos. From his arms to his back, each tattoo tells a story about his life and beliefs. Let’s take a closer look at the ink that adorns his body.

Early Tattoos

Keenan’s first tattoo was a small tribal design on his arm. He got this tattoo in the early 90s, before tattoos became as mainstream as they are today. As he became more interested in tattoos, he began to get larger and more elaborate designs.

One of his most notable early tattoos is the “L.D. 50” tattoo on his back. This tattoo refers to the album by the band Mudvayne, which Keenan was a fan of at the time. The album’s title refers to the lethal dose of a substance needed to kill 50% of the test population. Keenan got this tattoo as a tribute to the album and the band.

The Caduceus

One of Keenan’s most recognizable tattoos is the Caduceus on his left forearm. The Caduceus is a symbol of medicine and healing, and is often associated with the Greek god Hermes. Keenan got this tattoo as a tribute to his mother, who was a nurse. He has said that the tattoo represents “the balance between science and spirituality.”

The Eye of Horus

Another prominent tattoo on Keenan’s body is the Eye of Horus on his right forearm. The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power, and good health. Keenan has said that the tattoo represents “the divine feminine.”

The Sacred Heart

One of Keenan’s larger tattoos is the Sacred Heart on his chest. The Sacred Heart is a religious symbol that represents the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Keenan has said that the tattoo represents “the duality of man.”
