Rude Comments about Tattoos: A Growing Problem

Over the years, tattoos have become increasingly popular. In fact, according to a 2019 Harris Poll, 30% of Americans have at least one tattoo. Despite the growing acceptance of tattoos, there are still people who feel the need to make rude comments about them. These comments can be hurtful and damaging, and they need to stop.

The Impact of Rude Comments

When someone makes a rude comment about a tattoo, it can have a lasting impact on the person who has the tattoo. It can make them feel ashamed or embarrassed, and it can also make them feel like they have to justify their decision to get the tattoo in the first place. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression, which can have a negative impact on a person’s mental health.

Additionally, rude comments about tattoos can perpetuate harmful stereotypes. For example, someone who has a tattoo may be stereotyped as being unprofessional or rebellious. This can make it difficult for them to find employment or advance in their careers.

Why People Make Rude Comments

There are many reasons why people make rude comments about tattoos. Some people may simply not like tattoos and feel the need to express their opinion. Others may have had a bad experience with someone who has a tattoo, and they generalize that experience to all people with tattoos. Still, others may be uncomfortable with tattoos because they are different from what they are used to.

Regardless of the reason, it is important to remember that making rude comments about tattoos is never okay. Everyone has the right to express themselves in any way they choose, and no one should be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed for doing so.

How to Respond to Rude Comments

If you are the recipient of a rude comment about your tattoo, it can be difficult to know how to respond. One option is to simply ignore the comment and walk away. Another option is to calmly explain why you chose to get the tattoo and what it means to you. This can help educate the person and change their perspective.

It is important to remember that you do not owe anyone an explanation for your tattoo. You have the right to express yourself in any way you choose, and no one has the right to make you feel bad about it.

What People are Saying

“I have a tattoo of my grandmother’s name on my arm, and someone once told me that tattoos were trashy. It made me feel really bad about myself, and I regretted getting the tattoo for a while. But then I realized that it was my body, and I had the right to do what I wanted with it.” – Sarah

“I used to make rude comments about tattoos all the time, but then I realized how hurtful they could be. Now, I try to be more understanding and accepting of people’s choices.” – Mark

“I have a tattoo of a butterfly on my ankle, and someone once told me that it was a stupid tattoo. It made me feel really self-conscious, but then I realized that it didn’t matter what they thought. I love my tattoo, and that’s all that matters.” – Emily

Rude comments about tattoos are a growing problem, but they don’t have to be. By educating ourselves and others about the impact of these comments, we can work towards creating a more accepting and understanding society. Remember, everyone has the right to express themselves in any way they choose, and no one has the right to make them feel bad about it.
