Why Does My Tattoo Stink?

If you have recently got a tattoo, you might notice some unpleasant smell coming from it. Your tattoo might smell like rotten eggs, fish, or even sewage. The smell can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, especially when you are in public. But why does your tattoo stink? Here are some possible reasons:

1. Bacterial Infection

One of the most common reasons for a smelly tattoo is a bacterial infection. When you get a tattoo, the needle punctures your skin, creating tiny wounds. These wounds are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, especially if you don’t take proper care of your tattoo.

If you notice a foul smell coming from your tattoo, along with redness, swelling, and pus, you might have a bacterial infection. You should see a doctor or a dermatologist to get it treated as soon as possible.

2. Sweating

If your tattoo is in an area that sweats a lot, such as your armpit or groin, it might develop an unpleasant odor. Sweat can mix with bacteria and dead skin cells, creating a bad smell. To prevent this, you should keep your tattoo clean and dry, especially after exercising or sweating.

3. Poor Aftercare

If you don’t take proper care of your tattoo after getting it, it can develop an unpleasant smell. You should follow your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions, which usually include washing your tattoo with mild soap and water, applying ointment, and avoiding direct sunlight and swimming for a few weeks.

If you neglect your tattoo and don’t keep it clean, it can develop an infection, which can cause a bad odor.

4. Allergic Reaction

In some cases, a bad smell coming from your tattoo can be a sign of an allergic reaction. If you are allergic to the ink or the aftercare products, your skin can become inflamed and produce a foul odor. You might also experience itching, hives, or blisters.

If you suspect that you are having an allergic reaction, you should see a doctor or a dermatologist to get it checked.

How to Prevent Your Tattoo from Smelling

Now that you know why your tattoo might stink, here are some tips to prevent it:

1. Keep it Clean and Dry

You should wash your tattoo with mild soap and water, pat it dry with a clean towel, and apply a thin layer of ointment to keep it moisturized. Avoid touching your tattoo with dirty hands, and don’t scratch or pick at it.

2. Avoid Sweating and Sunlight

Avoid exercising or sweating excessively for the first few days after getting your tattoo. Also, avoid direct sunlight and swimming for at least two weeks, as they can damage your tattoo and increase your risk of infection.

3. Use Mild Products

Avoid using harsh soaps, lotions, or creams on your tattoo, as they can irritate your skin and cause a bad smell. Use mild, fragrance-free products that are safe for tattoos.

4. See a Doctor if Necessary

If you notice a foul smell coming from your tattoo, along with other symptoms such as redness, swelling, or pus, you should see a doctor or a dermatologist to get it checked. They can prescribe antibiotics or other treatments to get rid of the infection.
